Izzo, Calipari and Knight: One of these coaches keeps getting caught

by | Mar 20, 2015 | Uncategorized | 2 comments

Hello, Loyal Readers:

As most of you probably know, I’m working hard to finish my latest book, “Endzone: The Rise, Fall and Return of Michigan Football,” which will be published by St. Martin’s Press on Sept. 1 — if I get it done soon enough!  (You can pre-order it on the front page of my website, if you are so inclined.)

As a result, I’m writing fewer weekly commentaries during this final stretch, but I still appear on Cynthia Canty’s Stateside show on Michigan Radio on Thursdays, usually between 3-4 p.m., EDT.

Here’s a link to this week’s broadcast, naturally about March Madness – and more specifically about Michigan State’s Tom Izzo, Kentucky’s John Calipari, and former Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight.  All have their strengths and weaknesses, of course, but only one has led two of his programs to NCAA sanctions — and he happens to be the coach with the only undefeated team coming into the tournament.  Can you guess?

Hope you like it.

Please join the conversation, but remember: I run only those letters from those who are not profane or insane, and who include their FULL name.

Radio stuff: On Friday mornings, these commentaries run at 8:50 on Michigan Radio (91.7 Ann Arbor/Detroit and Flint, and 104.1 Grand Rapids), and a few minutes later,  I join Sam Webb and Ira Weintraub LIVE from 9:05 to 9:25 on WTKA.com, 1050 AM.

After 12 years, I’ve handed over my “Off the Field” slot on WTKA to my good friend Jamie Morris, who is launching his new two-hour show, “A View From the Backfield.”  Check it out Sunday mornings, 9-11.

This gives me the time I need to join Michigan Radio’s great Cynthia Canty on her afternoon Stateside show every Thursday for a few minutes.  Check it out!

Enjoyed the article and reconnecting with your work. You may remember that I hired you to do some radio voiceovers for PNC a few years back — the immortal “Here’s to you, tarp” spot among them. Hope all is well in Ann Arbor. I’m living and working in Louisville, the epicenter of slicked-back pinstriped coaching. Keep on speaking truth to power.

You are an outstanding writer and reporter, JUB. I especially enjoy your work on the BTN. Regarding the above, it’s hard to believe the President of the University of Kentucky would actually hire a coach who was caught cheating not once, but twice. I believe both UMass and Memphis had to “vacate” Final Four appearances.
