David Maraniss and His Michigan Books: In Conversation with John U. Bacon

August 4 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The University of Michigan Club of Washington, DC invites you to join us in a conversation between U-M faculty member and UMDC favorite John U. Bacon and David Maraniss, the legendary journalist and award winning author with deep ties to the State of Michigan and to U-M.

The conversation will focus on David’s award winning Michigan books. “Once in A Great City” (2015) is about Detroit in the early 1960’s, during the heyday of Motown, the era when the auto industry was at its peak, Detroit was bidding to host the Summer Olympics and its population was 1.7 million, more than twice what it is today. “A Good American Family” (2019) is about David’s father, a U-M student and writer for The Michigan Daily in the 1930s, later a Detroit journalist who lost his job and his livelihood because of the Red Scare.

This is a free event, but when you register you will have the opportunity to donate to the Samuel L. Chappell Family UMDC Scholarship, a need-based scholarship for a promising student from the DC region to attend the University of Michigan.

The link for this discussion will be sent to all registrants before the date of the event. Please register to receive a link to join us!
